There is no camping except for caravan parks, within 15kms of Cooktown. With some local knowledge we headed to Annon Gorge and found a spot on top of a hill on the other side of the river from the main access point (tour groups showed up there everyday).

The three vans with a communal covered area, the tarp comes out on rare occasions.
Very good part of the river here, a sandy beach type entry to some rapids for fun and safe swimming. We had a fire on the sandy area one day and cooked potato’s in the fire – delicious jacket potato!

Half Moon Bay beach, a short and narrow section near to and sheltered by the jetty.

The heritage historic shipwreck of HMVS Cerberus is submerged about 200 metres from the beach.

Sheltering the Half Moon Bay as a breakwater, the HMVS Cerberus has been rusting away since 1926.

Black Rock Yacht Club.

Boat sheds on the beach. Looking at some history plaques around the place, this beach has been popular for over 100 years.

Typically large gray stone brick of an older era.

Half Moon Bay Beach looking north. It was raining 3 minutes after taking this photo.

A no-swim wanring sign at the top of the walkway down to the beach.

This would be such a cool way to have a party. Many boats hang around Half Moon Bay as there is a jetty close by.
Half Moon Bay is a 40 minute drive south from the Melbourne CBD. It is easy to get, just off the Napean Highway in Black Rock. This is the second ‘beach’ I have been to Melbourne, I rate it somewhere lower than Fukuoka Beach in Japan and higher than the mangrove estuaries around Coffs Harbour in New South Wales.
